The Science of Log

We'll try to keep this simple, because basically it is.

Briquettes can be made from a huge variety of organic waste materials.
Most commercial briquettes are formed using pure materials and massive amounts of pressure, NOT glue.
They are extremely dense, dry, slow burning and give out a huge amount of heat.
They are clean to handle & clean to burn - very little ash or smoke - full combustion, the real sign of efficiency.
While they are industrially processed, they are much more efficient in terms of generating heat per kg of fuel.
They don't look as nice in your log basket, but they are cheaper, hotter and more convenient so they're in ours!

An unseasoned natural log can have well over 60% moisture - test one, you'll see!
Seasoned logs (left under cover to dry) should have less than 30% moisture.
A kiln-dried log should have less than 20% moisture.
A processed Briquette should have less than 12% moisture.
The more moisture in a log, the more energy is wasted in evaporating water before it can burn.
The more moisture evaporated whilst burning the more smoke and sticky tar in your fire and chimney.
Experts/Consultants/Boffins & Know-it-alls reckon 1 kiln dried is roughly equal to 3 wet logs, and 1000kg of briquettes is equal to many cubic metres of logs in terms of useable heat output.
Thus logs gain potential usable heat output as they dry - never buy timber logs by weight, you're paying for smoke!
Kiln drying can be done very effectively via solar power, and results in much more heat for you from the same log!
In conclusion, don't be tempted by a cheap wet log, it'll leave you sticky and cold. It's false economy.
